Cold Case Homicide Investigations Seminar

Cold case homicide investigations are some of the most difficult and frustrating cases a detective will ever work, BUT they are also the most rewarding. This two-day seminar focuses on how to resurrect these cases and hopefully give the family some closure. There will be a major focus on forensic genetic genealogy.

The Medicolegal Process: From Autopsy to the Witness Stand

This comprehensive course guides participants through the medicolegal process—from investigating and identifying human remains to presenting professional testimony in court.

Topics include:

• Courtroom testimony, depositions, professional demeanor, and preparation
• Techniques for remaining calm, unbiased, and in control during questioning
• Identification of unidentified remains using DNA, forensic genealogy, forensic specialists, facial reconstruction, media, and national databases
• Best practices for reviewing unidentified-remains cases and unresolved cold cases
• Cause of death and the five manners of death: natural, accident, suicide, homicide, and undetermined
• Roles and responsibilities of investigators, medicolegal investigators, and forensic pathologists
• Case reviews, lessons learned, and common investigative pitfalls
• Officer wellness and resiliency through the “Four F’s”: family, friends, faith, and fitness

Instruction: 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Working lunch—participants will remain in class during lunch.

This course is designed for law enforcement officers, investigators, medicolegal professionals, and others involved in death investigations. Participants will gain practical information they can apply during investigations, case reviews, courtroom proceedings, and throughout their careers.

TCOLE 53201 Death Investigation for Law Enforcement

TCOLE #3737 is required under Texas Occupations Code 1701.352 for any peace officer promoted to their first supervisory role. The course focuses on leadership fundamentals, communication, conflict resolution, counseling, liability, ethics, and school‑based law enforcement responsibilities.

1. Visit https://txletraining.elementlms.com
2. Click "Login" and at the bottom of the form select “New User Registration”
3. Once you create an account, log back into the system using new account details. (Not always does it log you directly in)
4. Once logged in select "Courses", "TMPA", and you will see a list of current classes scheduled.  Locate the class you are wanting to attend and expand the course by hitting the “+” sign.
5. Once expanded select “Click Here to Register”.  If the course is free no further actions are required and you will receive email confirmation of registration.
6. If the course has an associated cost, select “Purchase this Course” and Proceed to checkout.  
7. Once purchased you can see the courses registered for under “My Training” on the home page.
8. The system will send an email to the email address used to create the account (check junk folder) to confirm your registration and provide course details. It will also send a receipt if payment made by Credit card or an invoice if marked Pay Later.  
9. Should you need to cancel from the class, you locate the course under My Training and cancel from the course.  If a refund is required, complete and submit the Refund Request Form under the Forms Center.
